To be a left-handed calligrapher is no easy feat! Nicole, letterer behind The Left Handed Calligrapher, has mastered the art of traditional calligraphy—without a smudge in sight. We recently made a few updates to her online presence, streamlining the experience for visitors to her site. One of the biggest changes is sure to boost The Left Handed Calligrapher’s search rankings and visual appeal: responsivity. We converted her site to be functional across all devices (desktop, mobile, and tablet), an update that is both beautiful and necessary to maintain Google search rankings. With the essential responsive website update complete, we also made a few other adjustments around her site.
A primary feature was The Left Handed Calligrapher’s “Styles” page, which gives a lengthy list of (equally gorgeous) script style samples. We made it easier to compare styles with side-by-side favorites and de-cluttered dropdown images. Clients are going to love the practical functionality of this page!

Why did you start your business?
I had an on-again off-again hobby as time permitted in calligraphy and after my wedding, realized that it was a service I could offer to the wedding community. I was always destined to be my own boss and coming from a long line of artistic entrepreneurs, calligraphy seemed like the right avenue for me to make my mark. The funny thing is, I wanted to own my own business for the flexibility it provides… and while that is true – all small business owners know this – you work more than you would ever in a normal 40 hour week job.
What is unique about your business?
While I am an artist… I am a businessperson first. So my focus is on the client experience, on meeting deadlines and surpassing expectations first. As a small business, the work is constantly evolving to the needs of my clients and my skill only improves with time though hours of study and constant work. With that comes providing beautiful lettering for stunning events.
What’s on your Playlist?
NPR—all day everyday. Once that starts repeating (yes, it does a couple hours a day)… The Streets, Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift, Death Cab for Cutie, Foo Fighters… early 2000’s era music via a CD is what you will find coming out of my speakers.
Where do you find inspiration?
Everywhere—my family, nature, at the art galleries, through travel…. if you slow down your movements enough and keep your eyes open, the world is worth seeing.
Why did you decide to work with Doodle Dog?
Nikki is so great about walking her clients through the process, what is involved and is really knowledgeable with what it takes to get noticed on the internet. Doodle Dog has a long-proven history and she was really the only person I felt comfortable with to do it correctly and meet a deadline.
Why did you feel the time was right to kick-off this project?
The internet is ever-evolving. If you can’t keep your content and information up to date, then the customer will have more difficulty finding and hiring you. I think when the site is not working for you – it’s time to kick off the project. Also, I finally found a free moment to get all the content updated and knew if I didn’t do it now, it would be another year (or three!).
What’s your favorite part of your new site?
I love seeing the new logo. It’s so great. On the backend, it is so awesome that I can update anything on my own time and not have to pester someone else about it. I love having the freedom of time and ease to work on my own site content updates.
What advice would you give to someone considering a relaunch?
Gather your information and really think about what your customer wants and needs in their shopping experience… While the site is your work and your aesthetic, it is to attract customers so really focus on how your site communicates your message to the customer.
